Amazon’s Mama Bear Gentle Touch Diaper Review

Review Summary: Amazon’s Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers are a low- cost, no frills option similar to other store brand diapers.

I’ve tried countless diaper brands over the course of my 3 kids. So I decided to give Amazon’s Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers a try and write a detailed review.

I used size 3 diapers on my infant for about a week before writing this. This is my third kid and I’ve tried tons of different brands over the years.

He’s large for his age, and breastfed.  Your experience with Mama Bear diapers may vary. Every baby and parent is different and has different preferences and sizes!

Outside of the diaper

Let’s take a look at the features on the outside of the diaper.

Fit

Left – Huggies. Middle– Mama Bear. Right – Pampers

Mama Bear diapers are a bit larger than typical diapers. They are taller and a little wider – similar in size to Pampers.  I recommend starting with the size your child currently wears or using their size chart.

Bulkiness

These diapers are pretty thin and contouring when dry! They bulk up quickly when they’re wet.

Softness

As you might expect from a budget diaper, the outside of these aren’t particularly soft. They feel similar to Walmart’s store brand.

Wetness indicator

The yellow wetness indicator turns blue to show you when it’s time to change the diaper.

Mama Bear diapers do sport a wetness indicator. The yellow line turns blue once the diaper is wet to let parents know when it’s time for a diaper change.

Please note that you don’t need to change the diaper every time the baby pees. Change it whenever the baby poops, or every 2-3 hours during the day and whenever your baby wakes up during the night.

Size Up Indicator

Left: Huggies diaper with size up indicators shown in blue. Right: Mama Bear diaper with no size up indicators shown in red.

Like most cost- friendly diapers, Mama Bear diapers do not have a size up indicator.

Instead, parents can tell when to go up a diaper size when their child gets red marks from the diaper or when the diaper gets too full and leaks between changes.

Design and pattern

There are two diaper patterns in each package – one plain white one and one with polka dots. The size is noted on the front of the plain diapers.

Fastening tabs

I do not like these fastening tabs. They’re very plasticky and rough. They only have a small strip of sticky area, so parents need to fasten them just right. That’s a challenging task for me at 2 am…

Inside a Mama Bear Diaper

mama bear diaper review

More importantly, let’s look at the inside of Mama Bear diapers!

Softness

The inside is not uncomfortable, but not particularly soft.

Leg cuffs

The leg cuffs are about average. They’ll hold in most pee. But the elastic just isn’t that stretchy and tends to leak poop out the sides unless your child is about average size.

Odor

Mama Bear diapers are not scented. I didn’t notice any odor from them either!

Absorbency

Many babies who are breastfed and haven’t started solid foods suffer from diaper blowouts. I don’t recommend these diapers for babies in this situation. My 2 month old constantly leaked poop out the legs and back of these diapers.

That being said they handled pee just fine. If your child does tend to urinate heavily overnight, you may want to consider just using Mama Bear diapers during the day and a more absorbent brand overnight.

The diapers do feel a little wet after the baby pees, which is common in lower cost diapers.

Diaper rash

After using these diapers for a week, I didn’t notice any diaper rash or other reactions on my baby’s skin. However, he hasn’t had any issues with other diaper brands either.

Amazon does say that this brand is hypoallergenic and was dermatologically tested.

A defect in the diapers I bought

mama bear diaper review

About half of the diapers in the package I bought had a defect. When I would unfold the diapers, the two sides of the waistband were stuck together.

I could easily pull them apart, meaning they were still usable but it was definitely annoying!

FAQ about Mama Bear Diapers

Do Mama Bear diapers prevent blowouts?

Mama Bear diapers use the ingredients: fluff, superabsorbent polymer (sodium polyacrylate), nonwoven dryness layer, nonwoven polypropylene fabric, non-latex elastic, and ink.

Who should use Amazon’s diapers?

Amazon’s Mama Bear diapers are perfect for cost-conscious parents who find that store brand diapers work well for them.

In my situation, my kids are breastfed and have been larger than average for kids their age. So they have blowouts unless I use a diaper with an elastic waistband like Costco’s Kirkland diapers, Huggies, or Pampers Cruisers 360 fit (click for our full reviews!).

I’d rather spend extra money on diapers and not have to wash so many crib sheets and onesies.
