Top Baby Names by State
Each year the Social Security Administration releases statistics for what parents named their babies during the previous year. They even break it down by state! It reveals some fascinating trends, unique names, and other fun insights. Let’s take a look at the country as a whole first.
So let’s take a look at last year’s most popular baby names!
The most popular girl’s name in each state (2021)
In 2021, the top 10 most popular girls’ names in the US were
- Olivia (pink)
- Emma (red-orange)
- Charlotte (orange)
- Amelia (yellow)
- Ava (green)
- Sophia (not on the map!)
- Isabella (not on the map!)
- Mia (light blue)
- Evelyn (dark blue)
- Harper (not on the map!)
And in the map above, you can see that:
- Olivia stole the show! It was the most popular name in almost every state.
- However, check out the cluster of Charlottes in Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa!
- Amelia made it to number one in West Virginia and Alaska.
- Folks in Mississippi really like the name Ava
- And Evelyn was super popular in Oregon and South Dakota.
The most popular boy’s name in each state (2021)
In 2021, the top 10 most popular boys’ names in the US were
- Liam (light blue)
- Noah (green)
- Oliver (yellow)
- Elijah (not on the map!)
- James (not on the map!)
- William (orange)
- Benjamin (not on the map!)
- Lucas (not on the map!)
- Henry (red)
- Theodore (not on the map!)
You can already see from the map that the boy’s names are much more varied than girl’s names! However, seven different girl names made it to being the most popular in their state. Only five different boy names made it to number one status in a state!
And on the map above, you can see that
- Liam dominated, and was the top name in over 20 states!
- But Oliver stole many of the northern states.
- And Noah had surprising popularity all across the country, including California, Alaska, Hawaii, Georgia, Michigan, and Massachusetts
- The classic William is definitely loved in the south- Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina.
- Surprisingly, Henry is quite popular in South Dakota, Nebraska, and New Hampshire
The top five most popular girl’s names in each state (2021)
Looking at the trends of each specific state is fun! We find some places who follow the obvious national trends and others who have their own unique naming styles. Here we go!
Alabama
The top five most popular girl’s names in Alabama are
- Olivia
- Ava
- Amelia
- Charlotte
- Emma
Alabama chose the US’s top five girl’s names as their top five girl’s names, but in a slightly different order! They preferred Ava and Amelia more and Charlotte and Emma less, as compared to the rest of the country
Alaska
The top five most popular girl’s names in Alaska are
- Amelia
- Hazel
- Olivia
- Ava
- Charlotte
With Alaska being so far away from the rest of the US, you might expect them to have some different naming trends. And you’d be correct! While they like Amelia, Olivia, Ava, and Charlotte, they replaced Emma with Hazel! Even more surprisingly, Hazel is the 28th most popular name in the US!
Arizona
The top baby girl’s names in Arizona are
- Olivia
- Emma
- Sophia
- Camila
- Isabella
Arizona also has some unique tastes! While Olivia and Emma fell into the #1 and #2 spots as you might expect, Sophia and Isabella are two of their top choices. They also like the name Camila, which is hanging out as the #12 most popular baby name in America.
Arkansas
The most common baby girl’s names in Arkansas are

- Charlotte
The Arkansonians are pretty typical, they like Olivia, Emma, Amelia, Ava, and Charlotte.
California
In California, the most common names for baby girls are
- Olivia
- Emma
- Camila
- Mia
- Sophia
Like their neighbor Arizona, Californians love the #12 most popular girl’s name, Camila- it’s third on their list! They also like Mia, the #8 most popular US girl’s name.
Colorado
Colorado’s top choices for girl’s names are
- Olivia
- Emma
- Charlotte
- Evelyn
- Amelia
Unusually, Evelyn made an appearance on Colorado’s baby name list! It seems to be more popular out west.
Connecticut
The most popular girl’s names in Connecticut are
- Olivia
- Charlotte
- Emma

Connecticut almost follows the US trend, they just swapped Charlotte and Emma as second and third most popular.
Delaware
The most common girl’s names in Deleware are
- Charlotte
- Olivia
- Amelia

The folks from Delaware like Sophia and Charlotte more than the average US state!
Dist. of Columbia
In the DC area, the most common girl’s names are
- Charlotte
- Ava
- Maya
- Sophia

In DC, Maya is quite popular! It’s actually the 55th most popular girl’s name in the US, so it’s pretty unusual that it is that common in DC! Perhaps it’s replacing the similar-sounding name Mia.
Florida
Florida chose these as their top five girl’s names
- Olivia
- Emma
- Isabella
- Mia
- Sophia
The folks in Florida love the names ending in -a! Isabella and Mia rose a little higher here than the national average.
Georgia
The top five girl’s names in Georgia are
- Olivia
- Ava
- Amelia
- Emma
- Charlotte
Georgia follows most of the US in their baby name choices!
Hawaii
The top five girl’s names in Hawaii are
- Olivia
- Amelia
- Luna
- Ava
- Isla
But in tropical Hawaii, we see some new names on our list- Luna and Isla! Luna is actually the #11 most common girl’s name in the US. Isla is ranking at #33 and is becoming more and more popular each year. Interesting that the Island State loves a name that means “island.” Coincidence?
Idaho
In Idaho, the most common girl’s names are
- Oliva
- Amelia
- Emma
- Evelyn
- Harper
Moving to Idaho, we see the number nine and ten names, Evelyn and Harper, make an appearance!
Illinois
In Illinois, the most popular girl’s names are
- Olivia
- Emma
- Sophia
- Charlotte
- Amelia
Illinois is pretty standard in their choices of girl’s names, though they are pretty big fans of Sophia!.
Indiana
Indiana’s top five girl’s names are

- Amelia
- Emma

In Indiana, we see fairly normal girl’s names. However, Olivia is further towards the bottom of their lists and Charlotte, Amelia, and Emma have moved up!
Iowa
The most popular girl’s names in Iowa are

Interestingly, Iowa loves the name Charlotte!
Kansas
In Kansas, the top five girls names are

The most popular girl’s names in Kentucky are

Kentucky is pretty standard, though they like Emma more than Olivia, which is unusual!
Louisiana
Louisiana’s top five girl’s names are

While Olivia is quite popular in Louisiana, Ava has risen above the other common names to steal the #2 spot!
Maine
Maine’s most popular girl’s names are

Maryland
In Maryland the top five girl’s names are

Massachusetts
The top five girl’s names in Massachusetts are

Massachusetts likes the name Sophia more than average, but who can blame them?
Michigan
Michigan’s top five most popular girl’s names are

In Mississippi, the most popular girl’s names are

Here’s another new name! Paisley is quite popular in Mississippi. It’s all the way down at #52 if you look at the whole US.
Missouri
Missouri’s favorite girl’s names are
- Olivia
- Charlotte

Back to normal, we don’t see anything too out of the ordinary in Missouri

Montana
The most common girl’s names in Montana are

In Montana, both Evelyn and Harper appear in the top five choices!
Nebraska
Nebraska’s top five are:

And another new name! Nebraskans like the name Eleanor. It’s actually the long form of Nora that we saw up in Minnesota. Eleanor is currently the fifteenth most popular girl’s name in the US.
Nevada
Nevada’s top girl’s names are

- Mia
- Camilla
In Nevada, we see Isabella and Mia climb up higher than usual, along with Camila!
New Hampshire
The top five in New Hampshire are

- Charlotte
- Evelyn

Here’s Evelyn again! Don’t you just love these “stereotypically old lady” names? I think they’re gorgeous!
New Jersey
New Jersey’s top choices are

- Emma
- Mia

New Jersey is pretty standard, though Mia has joined the mix!
New Mexico
New Mexico’s top five girl’s names are

First up, we find out that Alabama really likes more traditional names like William. William also was the top choice in other southern states including Mississippi, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
Alabama also went with John, which is actually only the #27th most popular boy’s name in the US.

Wait, what? Wyatt? Wyatt only ranks #29 among boy’s names in the US.
Arizona
In Arizona, the most common male names are

Wow! Even though Henry is the ninth most popular boy’s name in the US, it was number one in Nebraska! DC, South Dakota and Vermont also chose Henry as their favorite!

Southerners in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina just love the name William! All of these states have it as their top choice even though it’s the 6th most popular boy’s name in the US.

We saw that when it came to girls’ names, West Virginia didn’t follow US trends very closely. We see that with boys’ names too! Waylon (#69) and Grayson (#35) don’t appear in any other state’s top 5!

And Grayson is the name of a county in Kentucky.
