Diapers 101 – Frequently Asked Questions About Diapers
Diapering can be an overwhelming topic for new parents — choosing a brand, finding the right ingredients that work for your baby’s skin, and learning how to change diapers quickly is a learning process.
This post will answer all your basic diaper questions so you feel informed and prepared to care for your little one to keep them comfortable and dry.
Which side of the diaper is the front? Which side is the back?
You can quickly tell the back of the diaper from the front by locating the stretchy waistband — the back of the diaper and where your baby’s back should rest when changing them.
If you’re using disposable diapers, the tabs are usually attached to the back of the diaper and tucked inside. Once you unstick the tabs to put the diaper on, you’ll see that they are attached to the back and stick to the front.
Many diaper companies conveniently label their diapers with “BACK” printed on them, making it easy for sleepy parents and caretakers to determine the back from the front quickly.
Some diaper brands print an outline of the diaper tabs on the front of the diaper, so you can easily see where to attach them. The diaper should sit high on your baby’s hips, at or above the belly button.
How can I tell if a diaper is wet?
Although most diaper companies deny their diaper products ever sag, many diapers do sag when they are wet enough. A saggy diaper is a key indicator that it is wet and needs to be changed.
You may also be able to smell a wet diaper. Many brands use perfumes on their products to conceal the smell of urine, but it’s often still strong enough to smell.
Lastly, the diaper will likely have a wetness indicator printed somewhere on it. The wetness indicator is a yellow line down the front of the diaper that turns blue when it’s been peed in.

What is a wetness indicator?
A wetness indicator is a visual aid on a diaper that tells you the diaper is wet. With most diaper brands, the wetness indicator is a yellow line down the front of the diaper that turns blue when the diaper is wet.
Wetness indicators help parents to know when it’s time for a diaper change before they can read their baby’s cues that the diaper is full.

What is the yellow line on the front of the diaper?
Known as the wetness indicator, the yellow line means the diaper is dry. When the baby wets the diaper, the yellow line turns blue. It’s designed to help parents and caretakers know when the diaper is wet without having to unfasten it and disrupting the baby.
Do all diapers have wetness indicators?
It is common for diapers to have wetness indicators, particularly in smaller-sized diapers, so new parents can tell when it’s time for a change.
Larger-sized diapers and pull-ups may not have wetness indicators; as your child grows, they may be able to communicate that their diaper is wet, or it will sag enough that you can quickly tell when it’s time for a change.

Are Pampers the same as diapers?
Pampers is one of the most popular diaper brands on the market. The brand offers diapers for babies and toddlers in various life stages.
These include preemies and newborns, overnight diapers, diapers that move and flex for mobile babies, diapers with ingredients for babies with sensitive skin, training pants for toddlers, and swim diapers.
Are disposable diapers better for babies’ skin than cloth diapers?
Many families elect to use cloth diapers over disposable diapers for their babies because of the positive environmental impact. Cloth diapers are believed to help reduce the carbon footprint of families who use them. However, cloth diapers are much more likely to cause skin irritation or diaper rash.
The superabsorbent polymers used in disposable diapers take in and retain many times their weight in liquid. This means your baby’s skin is more likely to stay dry, healthy, and rash-free because of the moisture-wicking materials used in disposable diapers.

How many diapers should my baby use in a day?
An average baby will use between 7 and 8 diapers per day. Diapers should be changed anywhere from every 2 to 3 hours. If you smell urine or think your baby has pooped, check the wetness indicator and change them immediately.
Disposable diapers are effective at holding moisture and keeping wetness off your baby’s skin. Prevent the risk of any skin irritation by changing your baby’s diapers as soon as you notice any wetness.

8hrs?
Great question! Yep, 8 hours sounds reasonable. Though I would never wake up a sleeping child just to change their dry diaper.
