The History of Teddy Bears
Did you know teddy bears are named in honor of President and big game hunter Theodore Roosevelt?
While on a bear hunting trip in 1902, he refused to shoot a bear tied to a tree because he felt it was unsportsmanlike.
A political cartoonist satirized the event in the Washington Post. When a candy shop owner named Morris Mitchom saw the cartoon, he contacted Roosevelt and sought his permission to use his name.
The candy shop owner created a stuffed animal that he called Teddy’s Bear. The toy was so popular that Mitchom founded the Ideal Toy Company.
Later, the Ideal Toy Company became famous for toys and games like Betsy Wetsy, Thumbelina, Magic 8 Ball, Mouse Trap, and the Rubik’s Cube.
