25 Lord of The Rings Female Elf Names

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, the female elves, often referred to as Elven women or Eldar women, play significant roles in the rich stories of Middle-earth. Although there are only a few of them, we’ve scrubbed through the LOTR books, movies, tv series and game releases to gather these female elven characters and feature them in this collection.

Amarië

Amarie of the Vanyar was an Elf who met and fell in love with the Noldorin Prince Finrod in Valinor. Although she did not follow Finrod into Middle Earth, when Finrod was allowed to return to Valinor, Amarie reunited with him.

Amarie is a Quenya name and the meaning is unknown. However it can be related to the words mára that means “good”, or mar that means “home”.

Andriel

Andriel is one of the Rivendell Elves in The Lord of the Rings: War of the North video game. She uses a staff as her weapon and she is capable of casting both protective and healing spells.

Aredhel

Aredhel also known as Ar-Feiniel is the daughter of Fingolfin and Anaire. Her name translates to “The White Lady (of the Noldor”, as she is described as a very pale elf and would only wear silver and white clothes. Her name also means “noble elf” in Sindarin.

Arwen

Arwen was the Half-Elf daughter of Elrond and Celebrian. She’s also called Arwen Undomiel or “Evenstar”. Her name means noble maiden in Sindarin. She falls in love with the mortal Aragorn and she loses her immortality when they marry. She becomes Queen of the Reunited Kingdom.

Arwen gifts Aragorn her Elvish Evenstar Necklace as her symbol of love and commitment.

Celebrian

Celebrian was an Elven noblewoman of Lothlorien, and the daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel. She was the wife of Elrond and was known as Lady of Rivendell.

Celebrian means “silver queen” in Sindarin.

Earwen

Earwen, also called “The Swan Maiden of Alqualonde”, is the Sea-Elf mother of Finrod, Angrod, Aegnor and Galadriel. Earwen is described with starlike silver hair.

The name Earwen is Quenya, and probably means “sea maiden”.

Eldalótë

Eldalótë means “Elven Flower”. She is a Noldorin Elf and was the wife of Angrod and the mother of Orodreth.

Elenwë

Elenwë was a Vanyarin Elf like Amarie. She was the wife of Turgon and the mother of Idril. She passes on to Idril the golden hair of her kindred. The name Elenwe is a combination of the Quenya words elen meaning “star” and we meaning “person”.

Elwing

Also known as Elwing the White, she was the half-elven daughter of Dior the Fair, and the younger sister of the twins Elured and Elurin. She married Earendil the Mariner who is also a half elf. Her name means Star-Spray for she was born on a night of stars, whose light glittered in the spray of the waterfall of Lanthir Lamath beside her father’s house” (J.R.R Tolkien).

She helped the seabirds that visited her tower and she learned to speak with them, and was able to fly with white wings to meet Earendil whenever he returned from his voyages. From afar, elves would see her like a white bird soaring in joy.

Findis

Findis was the eldest child of Finwe King of Noldor and his second wife Ildis. Her name is a combination of her parents.

Finduilas

Finduilas was the niece of Galadriel and was a Noldorin Elf princess of the First Age.

Galadriel

Galadriel was a Noldorin Elf Princess and perhaps the most famous female character in The Lord of The Rings. She is renowned for beauty and wisdom, and is described as the “greatest of Elven women”. She ruled over the woodland Elves with her husband Celeborn.

Galadriel means “maiden crowned with a radiant garland” in Sindarin, and the Quenya form of her name is Alatariel.

Idril

Idril is a Noldorin Elf of Gondolin, daughter of Turgo and Elenwe and the mother of Earendil the Mariner. She is also called Celebrindal, and is most notable for her secret escape tunnel under the hidden city of Gondolin.

Her name means “sparkle brilliance” in Sindarin.

Idrial

Idrial of Lothlorien is an Elven playable character in the video game The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. She has spirit powers that can revive fallen party members and remove all negative effects in the group. She can also summon a great Water Spirit in the form of a Stallion.

Iminyë

Iminyë was a Minyar Elf and one of the first spouses to the Elf-Fathers. She married Imin.

Indis

Indis the Fair was a Valyarin Elf and the second wife of King Finwe. She was known for her beauty.

Irimë

Irimë was a Noldorin Elf and the younger daughter of King Finwe and Indis. She joined the Rebellion of the Noldor and went to Middle-Earth. Her name could be from the Quenya words ire or irima which means lovely and desirable.

Lúthien

Luthien was the immortal Elven princess of Doriath. She was said to be the fairest among her siblings and that her beauty appears only once a millennia. She lost her immortality when she married Beren, a mortal man. She used her voice as her weapon of enchantment.

Luthien means “daughter of flowers”. It might also mean “enchantress” and “blossom”’. She was also called Tinuviel, a name given by her lover Beren. Tinuviel means “nightingale” and “daughter of the starry twilight”.

Míriel

Miriel Serinde was a Noldorin Elf and was the first wife of High King Finwe of Noldor. She was the best at weaving and needlework. After giving birth to her mighty son Feanor, her body and spirit were so consumed that she wished death which was impossible as an Elf, so instead her fëa departed from her body while she was resting in the gardens of Lorien. In essence died of free will.

The name Miriel means “jewel-garlanded maiden”. Her mother-name Berinde means “the Broideress” referring to her great embroidery skill.

Mithrellas

Mithrellas was a Silvan Elf who accompanied Nimrodel on her journey to the southern havens. She was lost in the woods and was found by Imrazor who later married her. She bore him a son and a daughter. Soon after she ran away and was never seen again.

The name Mithrellas could be a combination of the Sindarin words –mithren meaning grey and –las meaning leaf.

Nellas

Nellas was an elf maiden who lived in the woods near Menegroth. She watched over Turin whenever he strayed into the woods during his young days. She taught Turin Doriathrin, a more courteous form of Sindarin. She also taught him the ways of the woods. It was because of her teachings that Turin gained Elf-like bearing and knowledge. She testified for Turin’s defense when he was charged with the murder of Saeros. However, Turin did not seem to have remembered much about Nellas.

The possible meaning of Nellas is “Three-leaf” from the Noldorin element -nel “tri” and Sindarin word -las meaning leaf.

Nerdanel

Nernadel, also known as “Nerdanel the Wise” was a red-haired Elf maiden and was a gifted sculptor. She made statues that are so lifelike and realistic that they can be mistaken for real. Prince Feanor married her and she bore him seven sons which was notable because Elves were known to typically have a small size family. Her peaceful nature helped restrain the fiery temper of her husband.

Nernadel has unknown meaning, but her character can be related to someone wise, of free mind, and constantly seeking knowledge.

Nimrodel

Nimrodel was a Silvan Elf maiden who fell in love with Amroth, the King of the Wood who promised her peace. Her story takes a tragic turn when they get separated trying to get to Edhellond. Amroth waits for her at the port but a storm sweeps his ship away and he drowns. She fell in a long sleep and when she awoke, she journeyed to Edhellond to find Amroth but he was long gone.

Her name means “lady of the white cave” in Sindarin.

Tatie

Tatie is a Tatyar Elf of Cuivienen and one of the first six Elves.She was the second wife to the Elf-fathers to be awakened, and she was married to Tata. She is the mother of Miriel, Finwe and Indis.

There is no clear meaning for the name Tatie.

Tauriel

Tauriel was a Silvan Wood Elf of Mirkwood. Her character was invented for The Hobbit Film series. She is a captain of Thranduil’s Elven guards and leads the woodland realm armed forces.

The name Tauriel means “young woman of the forest” in Sindarin.
