The Longest Lasting Infant Car Seats

Infant car seats are designed for babies at just 4 pounds and can keep them safe and secure in the car for at least the first year of their lives.

Infant car seats are designed for babies weighing 4 pounds up to 35 pounds, but some families opt to swap the infant seat for a larger, more comfortable convertible seat anywhere from nine months to two years old.

However, an infant car seat is a perfectly safe option for your baby as they grow. In order to get the most bang for your buck, we’ve researched the most valuable infant car seats that will support your child as they grow, keep them comfortable and safe, and offer a quality product that any future siblings or other children can enjoy as well.

Other considerations

When choosing a long-lasting infant car seat, you may want to consider these factors:

Your baby’s size

Infant seats, and car seats in general, often make the car seat’s weight limit easy to figure out. Just look at the names:

  • SnugFit 35 – good for babies up to 35 pounds
  • Keyfit 30 – good for babies up to 30 pounds
  • Tech 35 – good for babies up to 35 pounds

But most children outgrow their car seats based on their height instead of their weight! Each car seat will have specific instructions on when your child is too tall. In general, your child is too tall for a car seat when their head is approximately 1″ below the top of the car seat.

For reference, at 18 months, my daughter is 27 pounds and 33 inches tall. Weight-wise, she could fit in any of these seats. But if I put her in an infant car seat, she would be too tall to even strap in, let alone use the seat safely!

And my three year old weighs 34 pounds. Technically, she could fit in two of the seats listed in this post! But at 36 inches tall, there’s no way! Her head would be hanging out the top of the seat! That is not safe at all.

How long do infant car seats typically last?

Luckily, most car seats are made with plastic and fabric that are easily cleaned. And most car seats expire 6 years after they are first manufactured (see below). You could likely use an infant seat for multiple children over 6 years with no issues.

For example, I inherited my Graco infant seat from a family member who had just finished using it with her one year old. I’ve used it for my two older children and hope to use it soon for my third. Each child used the seat until they were about 1 year old. So far, that’s three children, times one year each. The car seat has been in use for three years with kids in it, and five years overall, and is still holding up well.

Do infant car seats expire?

Yes, infant car seats (and all car seats) typically expire 6 years after the date that they were manufactured. The date is usually stamped onto the plastic part of the infant seat, somewhere on the bottom.

If you have an infant seat and base, check both pieces for expiration dates as they may differ.

And if you are in a car accident, the car seat expires immediately! If the car is damaged, the infant seat is likely damaged as well. It may be difficult to detect damage on a car seat, but it’s better safe than sorry. Consult your owner’s manual for exact details.
